You're right about the stereotypes - if we were presented by the reality more often, how interesting it would be... the other day we attended a party where the host family had Indian-Malaysian and Bosnian members (and that's just what I am aware of). The homecooked food was wonderful! :) I think about my own family Chinese-Malaysian, Dutch, Anglo-Australian, Irish, Italian... However, as a technological society we also need the precision afforded by atomic oscillations to maintain the exact time. It's not a question of which timekeeping method we should use, because we need both of them. The question is how best to keep them in sync.
