Thanks for this interesting links, Akkadis. I don't often come across conversation on abortion that hasn't been politicised, so I don't think I've given it the thought it deserves. Many of the experiences there are definitely worth thinking about.

I like how the writer says that "When President Barack Obama was sworn in on Tuesday, he was surrounded by an extended clan that would have shocked past generations of Americans and instantly redrew the image of a first family for future ones." You're right about the stereotypes - if we were presented by the reality more often, how interesting it would be... the other day we attended a party where the host family had Indian-Malaysian and Bosnian members (and that's just what I am aware of). The homecooked food was wonderful! :)

I think about my own family Chinese-Malaysian, Dutch, Anglo-Australian, Irish, Italian...

The oscillations of atoms are no less real than the Earth and the Sun. All of what we know about the universe, whether through rigorous science or informal observation and intuition, is a model of some kind or other.

I interpret this more as a debate over how best to reconcile culture and science. We have evolved, physiologically and culturally, to rely on the rotation and revolution of the Earth to mark time. However, as a technological society we also need the precision afforded by atomic oscillations to maintain the exact time. It's not a question of which timekeeping method we should use, because we need both of them. The question is how best to keep them in sync.

46. Been transported in an ambulance.

Why did you italicise that? Being transported in an ambulance is usually a bad thing either for you or someone you know. (I know, I've done it :D)

Otherwise, I think you win largely due to your Europe and African explorations :)

Hi Elissa

Steve alerted me to your latest blog. I hadn't heard about the floods in Venice. I am off news at the moment - too much of it is bad.

I will have to have a little surf and see if I can find out about the cause of all the extra water. Climate change is doing interesting things but Venice is also very vulnerable.

It is weird to see things in the news that you have seen. I think the bridge might be the Ponte Veccio.

Bye
