Diversity

Here’s an interesting article about the complex diversity of America’s new First Family, on Michelle’s side as well as Barack’s. The article talks about how this sort of diversity reflects the real complexity of most people’s lives and histories - not the cookie-cutter stereotypes we’re so often fed as “normal”.

I like how the writer says that “When President Barack Obama was sworn in on Tuesday, he was surrounded by an extended clan that would have shocked past generations of Americans and instantly redrew the image of a first family for future ones.” You’re right about the stereotypes - if we were presented by the reality more often, how interesting it would be… the other day we attended a party where the host family had Indian-Malaysian and Bosnian members (and that’s just what I am aware of). The homecooked food was wonderful! :)

I think about my own family Chinese-Malaysian, Dutch, Anglo-Australian, Irish, Italian…
