A Successful and Productive Day

With bullet points!

  • Sup Exam Invigilation:
    • Got there just in time after mysteriously losing my keys down the side of the couch (I’m quite sure that I didn’t go anywhere near the couch last night…)
    • Nearly finished hemming the skirt that I’ve been working on since ages ago
  • Op-Shopping:
    • Found a suit-jacket style jacket, that actually fit me, for $6! And I think it’ll go with my smart pants…
    • Bought four more ties for my tie-scarf (how-to video here) - now I’m ready to go! Might start in tomorrow’s sup exam :P
    • Bought two sewing patterns for 50 cents each - bargain! One of them is one that the Internet told me was out-of-print, when I was looking at it yesterday. It’s the larger-sizes version, but the bodice is just right for the dress I’m trying to make. Between these two patterns I think I’ll be able to do it without wasting too much fabric in experiments…
  • Spotlight:
    • I was looking for patterns for the afore-mentioned dress, but I found this! This is one of the patterns that the vintage dress-making crowd collectively drool over, and there it was in the shop! Butterick is evidently paying attention, because they seem to have re-printed several vintage patterns - will have to keep an eye out for more vintagey goodness…
    • Bought 4.5m of plain cream-coloured voile to make a muslin (dressmaking geek term for “mock-up”) of a dress I saw in a UK Vogue magazine while in Europe. The magazine people had cunningly covered most of the bodice with a text box, so I’m gonna have to make that part up myself. Fun fun! I’m sorta on my own with the skirt too, because the magazine said it was bias-cut (cut diagonal to the grain, rather than straight), and the patterns I have aren’t intended to be made that way. Hence the muslin, and also stop #4 of my day (see below).
    • I locked my keys in the car, and while I was waiting for the RAC man to arrive I planned out the making of this dress - starting from Step 0: Finish the Dress Form, through Step 1: Bodice Muslin, Step 2: Skirt Muslin, to Step 3: The Real Thing
  • Bunnings:
    • To buy stuff to make legs for my dress form. I’ve got 4 bits of PVC pipe, some wood, some glue and a couple of long screws. That’s the first thing I need to do, and it’s scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, or maybe friday if I find that I don’t have all the necessary equipment. I need to buy some more tools! There’s only so much you can do with a drill and a pocket-knife :P

So yeah, that’s my story. Yay, holidays! Btw - I’m planning to blog the whole process of making this dress. It’s going to be a bit of an epic, I can tell already…
