Milestone!

I just realised, this is my first ever sick-day! I’ve never had a day off work because I was sick before… That’s what you get for staying at uni till you’re 25 - you miss out on important milestones like this :P

And here, recorded for posterity, is what I did on my sick-day:

  • spent at least half an hour doing nothing but enjoy my non-feverish state. It feels so good!
  • tagged photos of my birthday dinner on facebook (a productive start, but only because I could do it lying down)
  • browsed the internets
  • got up at about midday
  • made a cheesie for breakfast/lunch
  • checked the Olympic coverage while my cheesie cooked. It was athletics and handball. I’ve mostly given up expecting something interesting
  • browsed the internets some more
  • washed my hair, and blow-dried it nice & warm, because the cold was giving me a headache. mmm, warm, clean hair…
  • played some supertux, some slant, and some fantastic contraption (warning: fun, but a time sink!)
  • more internets
  • also, lots of coughing and nose-blowing

Little Things

Sometimes the small pleasures are the best. Like waking up without a fever. Like waking up without a fever on your sick-day. Like still being in bed when your first tute of the day, the one that’s always hardest, is finished. And not having to get up to get the internet, because your laptop is all set up within reach. And that, because you got the flu shot this year, it only took two days instead of two weeks for your body to fight it off. Like today looking to be a much more enjoyable day than yesterday or the day before. Even if I am going to get up soon to get food! Mmmm…

Not A Good Sign…

It’s a bit of a worry when you’re going filling in the scholarships search page and your discipline doesn’t come up in the “Area of Study” list. Nor the two other possible names your discipline might be there under.  There in’t anything in the general/non-area-specific scholarships either… *sigh*

I might have to get a bit creative about how to get free money for honours :P

Hmm, That Was Quick…

Funny coz it’s true:

Week 3 - Brain Catching Up

The first two weeks of semester are over, and my brain is catching up. The first couple of weeks are so busy and so full of people and new things that I have no brain-power left over for anything else. Everything other than dealing with uni, and all the people there, just becomes too hard. So everything else, from laundry through to my Epic Sewing Project just has to wait till my brain has processing power to spare for it.

And hooray! This weekend I did manage to get some stuff done. I did some laundry. I finally did some tidying up - my clothes are all in the cupboard, I’ve got an empty rubbish bin, and I can now open and close my blinds without jumping. Hooray! I also did a bit of work on my sewing project, but got stuck when I couldn’t find my fabric pen or my duct tape, so I think some more tidying will need to be done. I also put the (more than slightly mouldy) compost stuff in the compost bin, and cleaned the stove. And I made a cake! I think my brain & I both got a bit over-excited about having thinking power available.

Hopefully I’ll soon be able to actually write some good stuff on this blog, which would be a nice change from the nothing-but-lolcats I’ve been posting recently. I have a spiel/rant about Olympic coverage hovering in my brain just waiting for processing and writing time. There’s also stuff to write about first-years and mentoring and the stuff we’re trying to do there. So… don’t go away - I promise you more writings, hopefully interesting. And more lolcats. They’re guaranteed.

I *heart* Lolcats

Yay For Lolcats

I’ve been feeling a little bit blah lately, not really sure why. It might be a delayed come-down after my holiday, it might be the fact that I have to start working again now that semester’s started, or that I’ve got much less money in my bank account than I’m comfortable with, and I won’t get paid for over a month, or it might be the weather. That last certainly does make it harder to get out of bed, particularly in my cold cold room. Could be all of the above. Grr.

But lolcats came to my rescue tonight. There’s nothing quite like lolcats for prompting a good happy-chemical-releasing laugh… This was the series of laugh-out-loud lolcats that greeted me today:

I <3 lolcats. They make the world a better place.

I also found a new webcomic - not so laugh-inducing, but good in a different way. It’s called Anders Loves Maria, and it’s a story about Anders and Maria (as you might have guessed), and their um, complicated relationship. It’s a good story. It’s also Not Safe For Work. Don’t look if you’re upset by cartoon sex scenes….

Last Week: Much Less Productive

Just found this on icanhascheezburger… This was me last week:

A Successful and Productive Day

With bullet points!

  • Sup Exam Invigilation:
    • Got there just in time after mysteriously losing my keys down the side of the couch (I’m quite sure that I didn’t go anywhere near the couch last night…)
    • Nearly finished hemming the skirt that I’ve been working on since ages ago
  • Op-Shopping:
    • Found a suit-jacket style jacket, that actually fit me, for $6! And I think it’ll go with my smart pants…
    • Bought four more ties for my tie-scarf (how-to video here) - now I’m ready to go! Might start in tomorrow’s sup exam :P
    • Bought two sewing patterns for 50 cents each - bargain! One of them is one that the Internet told me was out-of-print, when I was looking at it yesterday. It’s the larger-sizes version, but the bodice is just right for the dress I’m trying to make. Between these two patterns I think I’ll be able to do it without wasting too much fabric in experiments…
  • Spotlight:
    • I was looking for patterns for the afore-mentioned dress, but I found this! This is one of the patterns that the vintage dress-making crowd collectively drool over, and there it was in the shop! Butterick is evidently paying attention, because they seem to have re-printed several vintage patterns - will have to keep an eye out for more vintagey goodness…
    • Bought 4.5m of plain cream-coloured voile to make a muslin (dressmaking geek term for “mock-up”) of a dress I saw in a UK Vogue magazine while in Europe. The magazine people had cunningly covered most of the bodice with a text box, so I’m gonna have to make that part up myself. Fun fun! I’m sorta on my own with the skirt too, because the magazine said it was bias-cut (cut diagonal to the grain, rather than straight), and the patterns I have aren’t intended to be made that way. Hence the muslin, and also stop #4 of my day (see below).
    • I locked my keys in the car, and while I was waiting for the RAC man to arrive I planned out the making of this dress - starting from Step 0: Finish the Dress Form, through Step 1: Bodice Muslin, Step 2: Skirt Muslin, to Step 3: The Real Thing
  • Bunnings:
    • To buy stuff to make legs for my dress form. I’ve got 4 bits of PVC pipe, some wood, some glue and a couple of long screws. That’s the first thing I need to do, and it’s scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, or maybe friday if I find that I don’t have all the necessary equipment. I need to buy some more tools! There’s only so much you can do with a drill and a pocket-knife :P

So yeah, that’s my story. Yay, holidays! Btw - I’m planning to blog the whole process of making this dress. It’s going to be a bit of an epic, I can tell already…
